Catalogue

Reference Number: HC5/15

Description: Virtually all the pre-1870 Canadian papers were taken to Canada in the 1920s. The only significant ones remaining relate to the finance of the Canadian Grand Trunk Railway, Canada's first major railway, in the 1850s and 60s, and are of great importance [HC5.15.2-102]; for the post-1870 period papers relate to the Nova Scotia Railroad, 1881-83 [HC5.15.111]; the Western Counties Railroad of Nova Scotia, 1887-88 [HC5.15.117]; the Canadian Pacific Railway, 1884-90 [HC5.15.125-135]; and the Alberta Railway & Coal Co, 1892-98 [HC5.15.138]. There is also correspondence and other papers relating to bond issues for the Canadian government.A note on the classification of the documents relating to the Canadian Grand Trunk Railways:The documents were contained in one tin deed-box labeled ‘Grand Trunk Papers’.This box must have escaped the notice of Dr Shortt in his wholesale removal of records from Bishopsgate to Ottawa in 1926. There is evidence that the documents have been looked through comparatively recently -perhaps by Hugh Ripman, of Barings, in about 1935. At this time the bundle of documents were labeled, and the bundles themselves may have been made up. In making the present classification of the documents, the form of the bundles as found has been preserved as far as possibleThe documents are as follows:Documents concerning the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada:HC5.15.2-4 MapsHC5.15.5-9 ProspectusesHC5.15.10-23 Reports of DirectorsHC5.15.24-50 General correspondenceHC5.15.51-59 FinanceHC5.15.60-67 Memoranda by Thomas BaringHC5.15.68-72 Victoria Bridge, MontrealHC5.15.73-80 Subsidiary railroads in British North AmericaHC5.15.81-87 Canada, Parliamentary papersHC5.15.88-91 Legal papersHC5.15.91-95 PamphletsHC5.15.98-98 Papers concerning staffHC5.15.99-102 Miscellaneous
