Description: Baring Brothers & Co Old Firm Documents were removed from a tin deed box labelled 'Old Firm Documents'. The 'Old Firm' being Baring Brothers & Co, the partnership which suffered a severe liquidity crisis in 1890 and whose business was largely transferred to the limited company Baring Brothers & Co Ltd.This was not the only box of 'Old Firm Documents'. At HC1.204 the contents of a box labelled 'BB&Co Old Firm Documents 1920' are catalogued. 204380-397 was catalogued in 1997, HC1.204 being catalogued some years earlier. The contents of the two boxes differ in that the documents listed in HC1 date from throughout the nineteenth century covering the whole period of Baring Brothers & Co's existence, whereas the documents now listed mostly relate to the period late 1880s-early 90s - the period before and during the Baring Crisis. Exceptions to this are earlier documents which relate to major ongoing business and interests at the time of the Crisis.The contents of the third [and believed to be the final] box of Old Firm Documents were listed at 209803-20 by Robert Brown while on a placement as part of the archive course at UCL, 2006.The papers mostly relate to Barings' involvement in Argentina [in particular the Buenos Aires Water Supply & Drainage Co Ltd], Uruguay and Russia. In addition there are papers relating to Lapps Island in Cork [in which Barings still had an interest at the time of the Crisis].
