Description: Certificates Securities is an artificial series created for working purposes of the Archive. It contains share certificates, bearer bonds, treasury bills, transfer certificates, call certificates and any other certificates relating to the issue or management of securities, mostly bonds and shares.Some certificates were originally held in safe custody, for either Barings' account or account of clients, in the Main Safe administered by the Stock Office. They were recorded in the Safe Registers where details of ownership etc was described. They were removed from the Safe, on account of being worthless, when the safe's contents were reviewed during the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s. As contact had long been lost with the clients owning the securities they could not be returned to their owners and were lodged in the archives by the head of the Stock Office, Mr AO Akers.A few certificates held for Barings' account represented Barings' investments in defunct companies but mostly they were unissued [and therefore without signatures or numbers] bearer bonds held by Barings as paying agents for issue to bondholders against their indeminity in the event of bonds being lost of destroyed.Other certificates were held in the Stock Office but not in the Safe, eg specimen bonds, and were transferred to the Archives mostly during the 1970s following the closure of the old building at No 8 Bishopsgate.
