NP - Northbrook Papers

Catalogue

Reference Number: NP

Description: The Northbrook Papers were accumulated by successive generations of that branch of the Baring family. They were kept initially at Stratton Park which, until the 1930s, was the main house of the family. They were then transferred to 8 Bishopsgate. Therefore, despite the fact that they do contain records of the business activities of Baring Brothers, the Northbrook Papers form a distinct collection separate from the business records generated by the house. The papers of Thomas Baring, NP7, were deposited by 5th Lord Nothbrook in 1975.The Northbrook Papers were stored in tin deed boxes labelled A-E,G, and 1-13 [some also being labelled 'Political Papers and Diaries of Sir FT Baring' etc].Deed boxes A-D contained the papers of Sir Francis Baring, first baronet, 1740-1810. They are the records of the house from its establishment in 1762 until at least 1810. These records predate the business correspondence archives of Baring Brothers. The records in these boxes were examined and catalogued by TL Ingram and subsequently used in preparing 'Notes towards a history of Baring Brothers', of which typescript copies were made available in Mar 1963. A-D were also extensively used by Philip Ziegler and Christopher Platt in their official histories of Barings. The documents in A-D were in tightly folded bundles. Evidence suggests that these had been made up by Francis Thornhill, 1st Lord Northbrook, probably between 1860 and 1866. Box A contained 23 bundles, boxes B,C and D fewer.Box E contained papers of Sir Thomas Baring, 1772-1848. G contained family papers relating to the Vowler family, and genealogy of the Barings. Contents of a further deed box subsequently labelled L are the papers of Sir Francis and Sir Thomas Baring relating to their estate at Lee, formerly in Kent and now in the borough of Lewisham. The documents in all the deed boxes were unfolded and placed between boards in cardboard boxes. Each newly made bundle was numbered, for instance in Box A, from A1-23. Thus the contents of each bundle remained the same, only the form changed. In 1985 Audrey French made a simple hand list of the contents of boxes yet to be catalogued. This was a temporary measure to enable Philip Ziegler to have knowledge of all archives at Barings of relevance to his work. A simple chalk mark system prefixed by 'N' [1-13] was used. No attempt was made to rearrange the papers. In 1994/95 the catalogue of the Northbrook Papers was completed by Jane Waller. A numbering system was established to incorporate all the papers in the collection whilst recognising its distinct parts. The Northbrook Papers have been defined as the group, NP in the catalogue. There are 7 sub-groups, NP1-7. NP1 remains at the Baring Archive. The remaining papers are held by Hampshire Record Office.NP1 Business PapersNP2 Estate PapersNP3 Family PapersNP4 Papers of Sir Thomas Baring [1772-1848]NP5 Papers of 1st Lord Northbrook [1796-1866]NP6 Papers of 2nd Lord Northbrook [1826-1904]NP7 Papers of Thomas Baring [1799-1873]As part of this process greater detail was added to the catalogue for A-D [now NP1.A-D] though the numbering A1, A2, A3 etc was maintained as these business papers have been used and referred to by researchers. However the contents of deed boxes E, G and L have been renumbered: E, being papers of Sir Thomas Baring, now forms part of NP4; G forms the major part of NP3; L forms the major part of NP2.L [there also being NP2.S, papers relating to the Stratton estate].A major reorganisation and cataloguing project was undertaken with those papers which had previously only been allocated a chalkmark number and briefly listed. For the most part these papers, formerly stored in deed boxes N1-13, are the private and political papers and diaries of the 1st and 2nd Lords Northbrook [NP5-6]. A more detailed note on the organisation of these papers immediately preceeds the catalogued entries for NP4-7. Deed boxes 1-13 also contained estate papers relating to Lee and Stratton which are now to be found in NP2.The papers of Thomas Baring, NP7, were deposited by 5th Lord Nothbrook in 1975.
